Government shutdown updates: Congress adjourns for the weekend with no path to a deal in sight [View all]
The U.S. government remained shut down as Congress adjourned for the weekend on Friday evening amid few concrete signs of progress toward a deal to reopen the government.
Congressional leaders from both parties spent the first three days of the shutdown attempting to lay blame for the situation on their political opposition. The dynamics that led to the partisan standoff have remained essentially unchanged.
Democrats have so far stuck by their stance that they will only allow a funding bill to go through if it includes some policy changes they want. Their primary, but not only, demand has been to have subsidies for health care plans through Obamacare extended before they expire at the end of this year. Republicans have flatly refused to concede on that, or any, demand.
Meanwhile, President Trump has seized on the shutdown by threatening mass firings of workers and targeting Democratic states in the first wave of cuts to federal programs.
