(42,770 posts)I dunno whether it's right- or left-wing, but it's been around since at least 1943, when the B-movie Flight for Freedom was released. It stars Rosalind Russell as "Tonie Carter," who's Not At All Related in Any Way to Amelia Earhart, abd Fred McMurray as "Randy Britton," who's Nothing At All like her Alcoholic Navigator Fred Noonan on her Final Flight.
Set in 1940, the film has Carter/Earhart called to a top-secret Pentagon meeting before her around-the-world flight attempt. She's asked in the meeting to fake being lost near "Gull Island," where she can secretly land and wait to be rescued by the Navy, which has stocked the island with survival gear and food.
The strategy is, the Japanese wouldn't dare try to stop the Navy from searching for the world-famous aviator, which would allow searching every island in the vicinity and thereby gather a whole bunch of intel on Japanese military locations and strength.
There's a twist at the end, but I ain't sayin' nothin'.
