involved planning and stalking with the intent to kill or injure, through the use of interstate instrumentalities (mail and the Internet), and using a firearm in furtherance of a federal crime (stalking). https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25999169-indictment/. (The state has indicted him on murder charges as well, just in case he's declared a MAGA hero someday and Trump wants to pardon him. Doubtful but you never know.). So far there doesn't seem to be any similar evidence that Robinson used the internet to plan the crime or stalk Kirk, but in any event federal prosecution wouldn't make a difference in the outcome because Utah, unlike MN, has the death penalty.

Tyler "Maga" Robinson was spawn of the GOP. In his mind, he was making America great again by ridding it of Kirk. RedWhiteBlueIsRacist Sep 20 #2

Utah will be much harsher on Robinson than the feds. LeftInTX Sep 20 #3
There wouldn't be much difference in the outcome - both jurisdictions have the death penalty. Ocelot II Sep 20 #9
Kirk wasn't elected to anything, which is why it shouldn't be called an assassination -- it was just another gun death. eppur_se_muova Sep 20 #4
The term isn't limited to killings of elected officials. Ocelot II Sep 20 #6
