US Equity Futures Fall as Walmart Misses, Jobless Claims Rise [View all]

"US equity futures declined Thursday morning after retail bellwether Walmart Inc. posted a rare profit miss and as weekly jobless claims came in higher than expected.

Contracts on the S&P 500 Index were down 0.4% at 8:51 a.m. in New York. Shares of Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, slid after profits fell short of expectations for the first time in three years. Nasdaq 100 Index futures declined 0.4%.

Thursday’s trading extends the selloff in US equities to a fifth straight day, with traders also focusing on a closely watched Federal Reserve symposium that will feature a speech Friday by Chair Jerome Powell. Megacap tech stocks have sparked a rout in key indexes over the last several days, causing the S&P 500 to shed around $660 billion in value over that span."
