the protestors, granted not at high speed, but people had to jump out of the way. Can't remember the specifics, but he was cited and fined and it made the local paper.

So yeah, safety is a legitimate concern. I agree that the vitriol is noticeably greater, so greater attention to one's personal safety is absolutely a good idea.
