From today's email:
Sisters and Brothers -
Throughout the course of our Fighting Oligarchy Tour we have made it a point of going to a number of places that have had people asking, "Why in the world are you going there, Bernie?"
Places like West Virginia.
The truth is that the agenda of the Republican Party that dominates in West Virginia is NOT popular. Very few Americans believe that its appropriate for one person to own more wealth than the bottom 52% of households; that we provide massive tax breaks to billionaires; and that we maintain a corrupt campaign finance system that allows the very rich to buy elections.
My visits to West Virginia and other so-called "red states" on our tour have everything to do with my belief that our progressive message of justice -- economic justice, social justice, racial justice and environmental justice -- can resonate in every state in the country, including conservative states.
And it does resonate.
Please watch this video created by the organization More Perfect Union that documented parts of my visit to West Virginia. I think many in the Democratic Party establishment of this country would be very surprised by what you'll see.
More Perfect Union Video of Bernie in West Virginia
WATCH NOW
It wasn't that long ago that West Virginia was a Democratic state with two Democratic Senators that voted for Democrats in the presidential election. But as time has passed, places like West Virginia have been abandoned by the Democratic Party.
Weve got to educate, organize and mobilize working people in EVERY state in the country to fight oligarchy, authoritarianism, kleptocracy and the massive cuts to Medicaid, nutrition and education that Trump is proposing.
Not just in blue states.
Not just in swing states.
But in every state and every town in this country.
Let's get it done.
In solidarity,
Bernie
My take from this:
FLIP THE SCRIPT
Democrat versusRepublicanmaga is a gap that will never be bridged, but THE WEALTHY, with over 90% of the riches and damn near 100% control, are the "elephant in the room" that's shitting on everyone, and a way to UNITE people once they are not completely blinded by hate and lies. Bernie is busting his senior ass to make people aware.
Are you? Are we?
My two favorite graphics are below.

(51,996 posts)I'm afraid too many in power positions in the party are either blind to what is happening or complicit.

(20,872 posts)It is my belief that most minds are made up before election, and the tons of money thrown at election ads often is just because the other guy did it and we cant look weak.
The time for getting the word out is RIGHT NOW.
Elections are fought over issues other than the one that brings people together, the parasite that destroys jobs, wages, health, climate and the air and water the entire country.

(169 posts)Some people are overweight, maybe because they're stressed out and eat bad food. It doesn't make them stupid or bad.
We are losing the immigrant vote and the minority vote. Drilling down into precinct level the areas that are heavily immigrant are where the biggest shifts to the right occured. Similarly with Hispanic and Asian votes, and Black men. Polling shows support for gay people across the board, it's guys in the bathrooms of high school girls that rankles. I'd forget about calling people racist or the finger pointing will be at us.
Like it or not our party is viewed as the party of the highly paid elites. We get a lot more big donations from wealthy people and blow it on TV nobody watches and overpaid consultants.
The working class is interested in a good job, not money for trade schools or teachers unions but a six figure job today, like union coal miners get. So far our plans for immigration are to give visas low wage workers, that doesn't cut it. What are our plans for the millions already here? Until we have an alternative that is obviously beneficial to workers, we lose. Remember Hispanic voters aren't Mexicans, they are Americans.
I voted for Bernie Sanders twice, and I love his shtick, and he's right we don't need tax breaks for the wealthy, but right now people are looking at that little box over on the right hand side of the paycheck and the number is too low. $21 is the new 15, we don't need more workers we need more money.

(20,872 posts)Ill set aside time to make a graphic of my own.
The original had some generic rich fatcat instead of Elon.
Thats what a great guy I am.
And its easy. What do you suggest?
Id rather be creating than bitchin.
Thats what a great guy I am.
Oh, and Im collecting ideas for a new party platform (not the milquetoast variety.)

(1,348 posts)you can ignore the times, although it is better to watch and see the facial expressions of voters.
For those who do not want to watch the video, you can read the transcript by clicking more in the description and then transcript at the bottom.
"12:53
Its not only $1 trillion in tax breaks
12:57
to the top 1%.
12:58
It's a huge tax break
13:00
for large corporations as well.
13:01
So why do they need to have a tax break?
13:04
I could use a tax break.
13:06
I mean, I'm being real.
13:07
I know, I pay like 26% taxes.
13:10
Like, I could use that money.
13:12
[Bernie] Look, these people on top
13:15
are not nice people.
13:16
They want more and more.
13:19
They don't have $1 million.
13:20
That's chump change.
13:22
I mean, were talking about hundreds
13:24
of billions of dollars in some cases.
13:26
When you live here,
13:27
it feels like a poor country.
13:29
[Bernie] Yeah, that's a good point.
13:31
I mean, when you say we're the wealthiest,
13:32
like you said that several times yesterday.
13:34
And I was like,
13:35
is it true, though, because, like
13:37
Thats a very good point.
13:39
In aggregate, that's what, look
13:41
if we're sitting here,
13:42
and I'm worth $1 billion
13:44
and all of you are broke,
13:45
you add it all together, you divide it,
13:47
we're very wealthy.
13:48
Right? Were all worth $100 million.
13:51
But I got a billion and you got nothing.
13:53
That's America.
13:55
And if I say that I think
13:57
the United States should do what
13:58
every other major country on earth does,
14:01
guarantee health care to all
14:02
people as a human right,
14:04
are you gonna think I'm a communist
14:05
and a terrible person?
14:08
I think if people listen,
14:09
if you talk the way that you did,
14:11
and you're so reasonable,
14:12
like they've painted you in a bad light,
14:15
and it actually makes me very angry,
14:17
because, you know,
14:18
you see things and you believe it.
14:20
I'll just be honest.
14:21
I haven't really seen you talk before.
14:23
I haven't really, like, follow
14:25
I don't follow politics that much.
14:27
And so the last couple days before this,
14:29
I started watching some of your speeches.
14:30
And I started like,
14:31
watching your interviews,
14:33
and I was shocked.
14:34
I was like, Oh.
14:35
Not as bad as they had told you, huh?
14:37
This is not how he's portrayed
14:38
in the media, right?
14:41
[John] Were told that the biggest divide in America
14:44
is between left and right.
14:47
But Bernie came here
14:48
to flip that story on its head.
14:49
[Bernie] I think that whether you're in rural
14:51
West Virginia or in Burlington, Vermont,
14:54
you got the same exact issues.
14:58
And I think we don't let people
15:00
divide us up.
15:01
We got to come together
15:02
to fight for all of us."
