The false narrative that Trump presented was from the Heritage Foundation, not from anyone in the government. It's actually an important distinction because saying Trump was caught "cooking the books" implies that his administration is putting out false data. That would be very serious if it were true, but the fact he fired the BLS Commissioner should be proof that it is not true.

Trump promoted dishonest data from a private entity (The Heritage foundation) which is a horrible thing to do but is not the same as if government agencies themselves were to put out that dishonest data. This was simply Trump doing what he's done his whole life - using false information from whatever source he can find and lying about it to promote himself.
