went sunset. I was one of a busload of high schoolers sent out from EDD to pick Tomatoes headed to the local cannery. I picked seven boxes of fruit on my shift, and was so worn-out I gave them to the guy in the row next to me because I was overcome by the heat.
The punchline here is: every bracero who showed up for work could be expected to pick at least a hundred boxes a shift, and the bracero who picked the most boxes had his picture in the local paper, generally picking 125+ boxes.
UCD soon hybridized the fruit to be machine-harvested and sorted by workers on the harvester. After processing and adding flavor-enhancers, the Tomatoes were OK, but the raw product was not really what you would pay for, as it was quite hard and not very flavorful.
I was pretty sure the plan was to force all the fired Federal Workers and Medicare/Welfare-slaves replace the deported WORKERS in the fields... and then to the Klepto Mines when their production drops off...when push comes to shove they can fuel the Boilers. "Everything But The Squeal". This level of Humanity is not a reach for these Despicable Deplorables.
"Heck-of-a-job, Brownie!"
