Trump descends into panic as agenda fails - Another Day - Brian Tyler Cohen

Transcript:

donald trump gives his big beautiful
bill a big awkward push this is just
another day
[Music]
july 4th is just around the corner a
time for barbecues fireworks and a piece
of legislation that doesn't care if
millions of people get hurt by any of
those barbecues or fireworks president
donald trump says he wants to sign what
he calls his big beautiful bill by july
4th one of the central flash points is
its potential impact on medicaid
affecting health care access for
millions of lowerincome americans the
elderly and people with disabilities yes
lowerincome americans the elderly and
people with disabilities otherwise known
as the holy trinity of people that
donald trump does not give a about
which is why today he staged an event at
the white house to try and make his case
on why congress should pass this one big
beautiful bill thank you all for being
here to support one of the most
important pieces of legislation in the
history of our country and that's uh
everybody saying that virtually
everybody the one big beautiful bill and
when we were thinking about doing it
we're going to break it down into three
four five six or even seven bills and i
said "let's make it one big beautiful
bill." mike sure why have death by a
thousand cuts when you can have death by
one giant one now while this press event
was merely intended to highlight all of
the supposed benefits to americans
across the country you know awesome
stuff like cutting hundreds of billions
of dollars in food benefits removing
healthc care coverage from 14 million
people and adding trillions to the
national debt donald trump couldn't help
but take part in his favorite pastime
making everyday americans stand behind
him while he says crazy and they're
drug dealers and they're people that we
don't want them and they're murderers
you know they're murderers we got to
strengthen up our elections because the
voting is crooked as hell men playing in
women's sports or transgender for
everybody yeah you know maybe i missed
something but the last time i checked
i'm pretty sure the dnc's platform
didn't mirror oprah and her cars episode
you get a transgender you get a
transgender i think democrats just have
that thing called respect for people in
the trans community and as for this
president we need a new term for what he
does every time he has regular people
behind him and he just goes off on wild
tangents for an hour if a photo bomb is
when the people in the background ruin
the moment that you're trying to capture
a trump bomb is when the guy in the
foreground ruins the moment for everyone
behind him currently donald trump's big
beautiful bill is stalled in the senate
as members of his party debate what's
actually in the bill besides the massive
cuts to medicaid and food stamps
programs the bill also includes one of
donald trump's signature campaign
promises no tax on tips and if you're
wondering why he is so passionate about
delivering on this for the american
people well it really comes from the
person who inspired him in the first
place i was at a dinner in my beautiful
building in las vegas and unrelated to
this and i said "uh what's going on?"
very i don't i will never say
good-looking waitress because looks
don't matter anymore you know in our
modern society she happened to be
beautiful but i won't say that i won't
mention that but nevertheless a waitress
came over and i said how you doing she
said not good sir why well if this
dinner was at one of your establishments
she may not have been doing well because
you violate labor laws but maybe there
was another reason the government is
killing me on tips and she looked at me
she said sir there should be no tax on
tips i said "say it again
there should be no tax on tips." i said
"that's the coolest thing i've ever
heard." i walked outside the press was
there as always waiting for something
bad to happen hundreds of them i said
"ladies and gentlemen please announce
tonight there will be no tax on tips."
our president is such an unabashed
misogynist you know that if his waitress
wasn't attractive no taxes on tips
wouldn't be anywhere near this bill for
all we know his entire liberation day
tariff policy is just the result of a
lunch trump had at hooters but if you
were looking for some highquality
on trump's event today look no
further than his push for a proposed tax
breaks on car loan interest i said uh on
interest i said why couldn't we if a car
is made in the united states only
because otherwise we don't care if it's
made someplace else give the people that
buy the car a deduction on the interest
that they're paying to buy the car and
people said "what a great idea." it's so
simple it is so simple and all americans
have to do to get that $10,000 deduction
is buy a $130,000
car according to economists it would
take a loan of roughly $112,000 to use
up the full $10,000 deduction in the
first year of car ownership and um last
time i checked trump's enclave of
support in salt of the earth middle
america was not littered with $130,000
vehicles but not only is donald trump
lying about the actual facts of who will
benefit from his tax breaks he's even
lying in his comparison examples it's
like the paperclip somebody came up with
the idea of a paperclipip many years ago
1817
and he became a very rich person and
everybody looked at it and said "why the
hell didn't i think of that?" boy if
only one of his handlers had used a
paperclip to attach some actual facts to
his speech enter yan valer a norwegian
inventor credited with one of the
earliest designs resembling the modern
paperclip in 1899 valer patented a
paperclip design featuring two circular
loops joined by a spring-like wire
allowing it to grip papers securely
despite valor's efforts it was the
american inventor william middbrook who
would make significant strides in the
development of the paperclip in 1899
middlebrook patented the gem paperclip a
design that would become iconic in
offices worldwide how fitting that the
example trump used is not only factually
inaccurate but also one of someone who
didn't come up with his own idea but
merely slapped his name on products that
had already been around for years sound
familiar donald trump's endless stream
of lies may play well as sound bites but
when it comes time to actually get the
bill passed there is this unfortunate
thing called rules that keep getting in
his way today republicans trying to meet
that deadline hit another hurdle when
the senate parliamentarian determined a
key medicaid provision cannot be
included in the bill senate republicans
were hoping to use the proposed cuts to
medicaid to offset the cost of the
bill's tax cuts several senate
republicans expressed frustration that
this could delay a vote on the bill wow
those poor republicans must be so
frustrated with the political process i
mean not as frustrated as say an
averagel-looking waitress having her
financial hardship ignored by donald
trump but frustrating nonetheless yes
the nonpartisan senate parliamentarian
plays a crucial role on what can and
can't be included in this fast-tracked
bill if the senate wants to pass it with
a simple majority under what's called
reconciliation so people on the right
will either have to go back and fix the
bill or why is a woman who's unelected
by my account she may be one of the most
powerful unelected bureaucrats in
washington dc having any say in this
republicans can rebuke her they don't
have to listen to her i think the first
order of business would be to fire her
the problem with the route that they're
taking to get one big beautiful bill
passed is it's the reconciliation route
it's the um it it's it's going through
these procedures that are senate rules
these are senate rules it's not like
this is a constitution rule they make
this up so they have to play by the
rules that they're doing and that's
that's biting them in the in the behind
right now the behind wow for a guy who
seems quite cool with dismantling the
rules that keep our democracy intact
he's really hellbent on sticking to some
strict obscenity rules on television
look on independence day there are going
to be a lot of fireworks going off based
on how trump's bill shakes out if he
gets his way it'll be the classic red
white and blue celebratory kind in the
sky but if republicans don't get that
bill on his desk i have a feeling trump
is aiming those fireworks toward
congress good thing he doesn't see
anything wrong with a little mayhem on
capitol hill but this is a major moment
for the republican party in showcasing
how much they care about the rules if
donald trump is able to strongarm his
party into firing the parliamentarian
just to get this bill passed that is
simply another example of the gop
admitting that they will destroy
anything in their path anything in their
way in pursuit of enacting their agenda
and exercising raw power and this is
going to sound strange but if that comes
to pass this can also be a watershed
moment for another party the democrats
time and time again when the democratic
party has found themselves in power in
their effort to be dutiful stewards of
governmental process they also find
themselves coming up empty it happened
with obama and his supreme court
nominees it happened with biden's plan
to provide a pathway to citizenship for
8 million immigrants hell we didn't get
national voting rights legislation
because democrats felt it was necessary
to defend the filibuster over one of the
tentpoles of democracy as uncle ben
classically said "with great power comes
great responsibility." and the democrats
now have a responsibility to acknowledge
who their opponents really are and what
kind of game they're playing the
american people don't want their
medicaid cut they don't want their food
stamps cut and they definitely don't
want to see billionaires getting another
tax break so they can buy an extra
vacation property on mars but that
relies on the democrats actually playing
the same game as republicans it relies
on the democrats recognizing that they
are not in office to protect some
institutions of government they are in
office to deliver for the american
people and if democrats keep forgetting
that maybe someone should paperclip it
to their foreheads
