Dems draw a line: Shutdown deal MUST include health care protections - The Weekend - MSNBC

Trump is expected to meet with the top Republican and Democratic congressional leaders at the White House tomorrow, just days after he abruptly cancelled a planned meeting with the Democrats at the urging of Republican leaders.

In a joint statement confirming tomorrow's meeting, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said: "We are resolute in our determination to avoid a government shutdown and address the Republican healthcare crisis. Time is running out." Congressman Pete Aguilar (D-CA) joins The Weekend to discuss. - Aired on 09/28/2025.

Why is no one talking about the fact the GOP controls both Houses & dont NEED a dem vote? Callie1979 19 hrs ago #1
The bill requires 60 votes in the Senate and Republicans only have 53 seats - so they need at least 7 Democratic votes Rhiannon12866 19 hrs ago #2
Would have been nice to take a stand back in March gab13by13 17 hrs ago #3

and hold up passing the CR until Democrats got protections for the social safety net,

The gutting of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, etc, is now law, good luck trying to undo a law.

Also the reimbursements to Obamacare are set to expire.

The time to take a stand was March but Schumer led a handful of Senators to kneecap the majority of Congressional Democrats and now he is in a huge dilemma.

Just curious how many DUers were opposed to taking a stand back in March? I know I was criticized for wanting the social safety net protected,, was told passing the CR would protect Social Security, well it certainly did not.

One thing that I heard is that a Democratic Representative from Arizona just won a special election to replace her late father. But it appears that Mike Johnson is taking his time swearing her in. There was a Republican member in the same position and he's been sworn in already.
