HOLLAND Local real estate attorney Nathan Bocks will be Hollands next mayor after he defeated Mayor Nancy DeBoer at the polls on Nov. 5.
Bocks earned 3,839 votes 53.4 percent of the vote to unseat DeBoer, who received 3,349 votes, according to unofficial vote tallies.
''Weve got work to do. Weve got a challenge before us. The thing that resonated in this community, more than any other, is that we are going to celebrate the value of everyone that calls Holland home, Bocks told supporters.
DeBoer opposed expanding anti-discrimination protections, while Bocks embraced them. In a campaign letter DeBoer wrote with city council candidate Vicki-Lynn Holmes, DeBoer and Holmes said they worried about creating a negative situation in our attempt to do a good thing.
Bocks said part of making Holland a more welcoming city is ensuring LGBT residents are protected from discrimination under the law.
