I think if DU as a neighborhood and you are a fixture here. We sometimes butt heads but I’m always glad to see you around. You will be missed.

..... where I was being stationed. During the field medicine training, we were told to consider that we might be the last person a dying soldier would hear. The Chaplain who spoke to us about those moments said we should think about what we might say that could be of comfort.

I settled on John 3:16, one of the few verses I remembered from Sunday school.

John 3:16 states: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life."

William, I hope this is of comfort to you.

To complete the story, after field medicine training, I went to Operating Room Scrub Tech training.

During the Vietnam War, soldiers were treated in a field hospital, like the MASH hospital from TV, to stabilize them for transportation back home. To my knowledge, the route was always the same: first to Germany, Ramstein Air Base, for further care, then to the U.S.

Once they were in the U.S., the military tried to hospitalize them as close to home as possible so they could be near family.

In my case, that was the military hospital in South Carolina where I was stationed. We often admitted them 3-4 days out of the jungle. We would care for them until they were well enough to be discharged.

I told my brother to tell him that it’s okay, he can go. I heard my brother say that to him . Then he told me “He’s gone.”.
