Before cars were a thing, did storm chasers do their chasing on horseback and then ride into town to give the news?

Just wondering about the history from here in tornado alley.

Just kidding around, I know they went straight to the local saloon to calm down...

light thing downtown to let you know if some particular weather was on the way. Snow was one color, thunderstorms another. I lived there less than two years around 1982 so I don't recall specifics. But it was really helpful.
