I have found a comfortable and stimulating philosophical/spiritual home in a Unitarian Universalist congregation about 10 miles from home. Several of the members are atheists, and the minister emeritus, who served for 25 years, was also an atheist. We have everything else, too - lots of folks who call themselves "recovering Catholics," Buddhists, pagans patchwork quilt agnostics like myself. Some of the most committed and upstanding people I have ever met.

I have a new musical skill as a result of this - I am now a handbell ringer.

Back when Christianity was young the Romans thought that the Christians were Atheists because they rejected all but one god. We all know the Romans had many gods the believed in.

Ironic heart.

I was always the new kid because we moved around. Back in the ‘50s, it was common for teachers to hand out Valentines by standing in front of the class, reaching into the big basket where we’d all put our cards, and calling out the recipients’ names. The popular girls giggled as they collected their dozens. I think I got one once but I’m not sure. Last year, here at DU, I surprised myself by being very affected by this heart-giving thing. I was back in grade school, waiting and hoping for a Valentine, while at the same time laughing at myself for being such a ninny. I did get hearts and was grateful. But I’m bothered by all the threads gushing “Oh thank you so much for my hearts! You love me, you really love me!” Because there are silent members (like I was before this post) who are the new kids looking down at the floor as their names are never called. So...I will never start such a thread, but I thank you for my hearts...with all my heart.

I really detest the multiple thanks for hearts threads. It why I bring my hearts to this group. Here’s yours.
