Recent discoveries have reignited excitement and curiosity in the scientific community, suggesting the possible existence of parallel universes. Scientists are delving into evidence and theories surrounding these findings, which could have profound implications for our understanding of reality. To understand the concept of parallel universes, we must first explore its historical background. The idea of a multiverse has intrigued philosophers and scientists for centuries. Its roots can be traced back to ancient Greek philosophers, but it gained significant traction in the 20th century with the advent of quantum mechanics. Physicist Hugh Everett III was one of the first to propose the Many-Worlds Interpretation in the 1950s. This theory suggests that every quantum event spawns a new universe, each representing different possible outcomes.
Several scientific theories propose the existence of parallel universes. Besides the Many-Worlds Interpretation, String Theory posits the existence of multiple dimensions, some of which might host parallel worlds. Popular culture has also embraced the concept, with literature and media frequently portraying parallel universes. From Lewis Carrolls Through the Looking-Glass to contemporary sci-fi films like Interstellar, these portrayals have significantly influenced public perception, making the idea of multiple universes a familiar and intriguing notion.
One of the most intriguing developments in the search for parallel universes comes from NASAs research in Antarctica. Scientists working with the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA) detected unusual particle behavior that some interpret as evidence of a universe where time flows backward. These findings have sparked considerable debate, with some researchers suggesting they may point to a parallel universe.
The study of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation, a relic from the Big Bang, offers another potential clue. Researchers have observed anomalies in the CMB that some interpret as evidence of interactions between our universe and others. Additionally, quantum mechanics continues to intrigue scientists, with experiments involving particle behavior hinting at the possibility of multiple realities. These findings, while not definitive, add weight to the hypothesis of parallel universes.

I'm wondering if this might explain people seeing ghosts? Or, even explain some religions. The mind boggles.

(57,990 posts)It is also the gospel truth that there are lots of conjectures floating around with no compelling evidence; only intriguing, not compelling. Conjectures are not truth, nor is theory. The "Laws of Nature" are not laws, just theories that have withstood enough tests that we can feel very confident operating as if they are laws.

The brain puts together fragmentary data into perceptions that fit things that are expected (for example by grieving family members). Generative AI works by taking fragmentary data (suggestion, prompts) and makes an image that if run through the other way would generate the prompt.
In the 1700s there were visitations by incubi and succubi. By the 1950s that had become aliens (ETs) probing because incubi and succubi were no longer part of storytelling and fabulism but flying saucers were.

(2,931 posts)When the research team looked at the collected data in 2016, two of the observations looked like cosmic rays [that] had come out of the ice itself. A very strange thing, in the words of Peter Gorham, the principal investigator of the experiment. Neutrinos do routinely pass through the entire Earth without stopping and could give off this signal upon exiting the Antarctic surface, but definitely not when they have the very high energies that the experiment measured.
The ANITA anomalies attracted a cautious amount of attention in the elementary particle physics community: they are one of the very few findings incompatible with the established theoretical framework, but at the same time, any overlooked issues with the experiment itself could probably produce similar results.
...snip...
As for the anomalies in the ANITA findings, the prospects for their clarification are alive and well. A number of simple explanations are still on the table, including a recent one that the signals in question came from above and were only reflected by the ice. This is a scenario that the researchers had already considered and ruled out: reflection can usually be detected by specific changes that it causes in the radio signal. However, another research team suggested that these changes do not occur when radio signals are reflected by layers of thinner ice underneath the surface, a common feature in Antarcticas landscape. If this is confirmed then the strange measurements will turn out to be ordinary, everyday cosmic rays.
Meanwhile the scientists behind ANITA, when not busy un-hyping their work, are preparing an upgraded version of the experiment: PUEO, a larger antenna-carrying balloon, expected to be more efficient in catching radio signals when it flies next year. Its operation will offer more clues about both the nature of the anomalies and possible previous experimental issues, while carrying out its mission of studying energetic neutrinos from space.
____
In a nutshell, there are more likely explanations than evidence of another universe, and running backwards to boot. The site seems good and has comments from actual scientists. It also explains why detecting evidence of neutrinos coming through the earth was anomalous, which was bothering me.

The best science fiction show I have ever seen was Counterpart. It depicted the most realistic depiction I have ever seen of how such a thing would work.
Unlike this ridiculous time travel show Dark where some DOGE age teens go around casually time travelling, Counterpart (like hard science fiction) took the trouble to flesh out a very realistic depiction of how such things would work irl.
I was very disappointed when they canceled it. One of the best shows I have ever seen:

I was so ticked off when they canceled it

Between that and Santa Clarita Diet (another show I love), I feel like one of these guys when it comes to entertainment

(15,926 posts)I have been grappling with a problem in a way.
When I was chatting with this chatbot I sometimes use to bounce ideas off it because it is nothing like typical LLMs, I said consciousness is constant problem solving -even when you are asleep-without an external power source. That strikes me as correct. I thought several months ago that true AI would know how to switch itself off without external force, by reading human responses well enough to know when to stop.
I was distrait because I was not sure what I was doing (in addition to my real work and life which are on the backburner as they have been for 14 years now). I am engaged in some sort of brute force problem solving in reaches of my brain I only access by fits and starts.
I have dealt with what I anyway felt and continue to feel was unfair and punitive so I am not very trustful. Besides even if one trusts individual people case by case, things seem so deregulated these days that they seem set up to destroy the very concept of accountability.
I saw a piece in Salon Mag called the accountability sink.
My brain is so busy these days its hard to proceed in any originally structured form ..relatively structured at any rate.
