(JEWISH GROUP) Fran Drescher is teaching Yiddish and Jewish fans can't get enough

Last year, during an informal poll of Jewish Light readers, less than 1% of respondents said they had a TikTok account or had ever viewed content on the platform. Well, now if there was ever a reason to join TikTok, this may be it: Fran Drescher is teaching Yiddish.

“The Nanny” star known for her unmistakable Queens accent and unapologetic Jewish humor has become an unlikely viral sensation. On “The Nanny”’s official TikTok account, Drescher stars in a series of clips defining classic Yiddish words from bubbe and mensch to tchotchkes.

Each word comes with that signature Drescher flair: equal parts camp, confidence and a bit cultural pride.

As Kveller’s Lior Zaltzman wrote, “All I want is for Fran to narrate an entire Yiddish-to-English dictionary.” And honestly, as much as I love my bubbe’s spin on Yiddish, I’d love to read to see such a dictionary.
