Suggestion for the Christian Left
MAGA and the NatC takeover of the US began decades ago. The movement is deeply centered in NatC churches and, when the Republicans partnered with evangelicals they contracted a virus. That virus has now killed the host and threatens the entire country.
During all of this the Christian Left took a very tolerant, "turn the other cheek", agree to disagree approach. For those of us outside now any claims of "those aren't real christians" are very hollow.
But I think there may be a away to rally the Christian left and middle and activate them the way that the NatCs have been activated for decades.
You have to recognize that Christian Nationalism is a threat to existence of your churches. Your pastors need to talk about it from the pulpit.
NatCs believe that the first amendment is written solely to protect christianity from government. They believe that separation of church and state is evil. So, of course, their solution is to seize hold of the state. But these kinds of movements never have a stopping point. Their quest for purity will become more and more exclusive.
This is why your churches are at risk. I'm sure that your pastors try to stay within the bounds of the 501(c)(3) requirement against lobbying. NatC churches don't care. They lobby every Sunday from the pulpit. I encourage you to ask your pastors to take up this issue - your fellow parishioners need to get out and vote against any and all republicans because they WILL come to shut your churches down for being too liberal and being "sanctuaries" for horrible progressive ideals like DEI, women's rights, LGBTQ+ rights, etc.
The Christian Left needs to stand up and show itself if it wants to survive.

(7,250 posts)I'm sure that more moderate C's are uncomfortable with where this is going. I applaud anyone who reaches out to turn things around in this demographic. Thank you!

(14,874 posts)There's plenty of very orthodox and theologically Conservative arguments to be made against Christian Nationalism.
It's highly legalistic and it entirely ignores everything Christ taught about loving other people as you love yourself.
Christian Nationalism by it's nature can't be refuted by secular arguments as those will not be received in good faith by the people it appeals to. But there are many Christian arguments against it, and almost all of those originate in the Bible.

(1,767 posts)...because that can imply that the Christian "Right" is equal in validity. We need to stop abdicating what power we have, leaving it to be misused. The fact that progressive denominations may be uncomfortable with their/our institutional power because of history we participated in (forced indigenous conversions, enslavement, etc.) -- and as a result, hesitate to claim our place in the current national conversations, does not mean that that power simply goes away. It just means that the lies told by theocrats are the only message being heard by people looking to the churches for guidance.
Even on this site, mischaracterizations and outright bigotry about Christianity goes too often without a countering voice. (Am I even allowed to say that here, or does it violate TOU?) Why is that?
I agree with much of the rest of the OP's insights. And I am very glad to see more voices (and protest signs) both putting out actual Christian messaging, and calling out the anti-Christian policies of the trumpists. More of that, please!
I think that the prohibition on "lobbying" from the pulpit may have been changed, though, due to a recent court case. It will take awhile to dig up and summarize, so I'll have to do that later. Bp. Budde certainly found a way to speak truth to power, and from the most prominent Episcopal pulpit in the US, too.
