Typically I wait until I'm at my destination before I toss my boarding pass.
Another tip: don't toss out the baggage tags you get when checking bags until your arrive at your destination and retrieved your bags. In the past, I just stuff them in my purse, but I'll be a little more careful next time. My bags got delayed and I had to rummage through my purse to fine the bar coded tags. Luckily I hasn't tossed them.
