Trump says automakers, Tesla must build cars, parts in US

(Reuters) -Automakers in the United States, including Tesla, must build entire vehicles including all their parts in the country instead of manufacturing parts abroad, President Donald Trump said on Friday.
The comments from Trump, at a press conference marking Tesla CEO Elon Musk's last official day at the White House as a senior adviser, were in response to a question on tariffs hurting companies such as Tesla that import auto parts from other countries.
"He's going to end up building his whole car here. Pretty much he does," Trump said referring to Musk. "All of the manufacturers will build their parts here too."
"It used to bother me they make a part in Canada, a part in Mexico, a part in Europe, and sent all over the place, and nobody knew what the hell was happening," Trump said. "But over the next year, they've got to have the whole thing built in America. That's what we want."

The prices of used cars will rise as a result as people look for alternatives to buying new. Trump is going to kill the US car industry.

(7,889 posts)The auto industry is multinational in both the manufacture and sales of their cars.
To change their manufacturing and marketing to suit one man who is going to be a short lived phenomenon is an idiotic idea.
It would require perhaps 10 years and hundreds of billions of dollars to have American cars 100% made in America. Not to mention hundreds of thousands more workers; workers we don't have and aren't going to have thanks to the President's deportation policy.
Also, the price of those cars would be too high for most people to afford to buy them.
We're rapidly approaching a 25th Amendment situation here folks. Trump is losing brain function more and more each day. The sad part is that JD Vance is Vice-President. Him taking the oath of office is a sight I never want to see.
