to reach through the night deep expecting to be saved
eyes closed fists clenched muscles cramp sore and taut
that once was caught asleep awakened to be depraved
wallowing and sweat drenched in despair and fraught
voiceless screams call to god to find non-existent ears
whispers and whimpers beseech eliciting no responses
a belief based upon the fraud created to assuage fears
slowly the light starts to leach from protective sconces
the black spaces grow larger reality begins to collapse
retrieving precious memories before the center is lost
preparing for a final departure clinging to life’s scraps
hopelessly hoping for remedies while ignoring the cost
all while stalking redemption following trails of ghosts
nearing a possible perdition as the scent of flesh roasts
