too late the hero

once more arriving a little late the disaster done
staring uselessly at damage that can’t be repaired
to ever again test the fate as hopelessness comes
acknowledging the savage cries of the despaired
furtively open the front door glance about in hope
walk to the foot of the steps peering up the stairs
listen for creaks in the floor wonder if i can cope
descend to the lowest depths to reach evil’s lairs
hearing a sound breathing to then sigh with relief
a bit of light on a face still calmly reposed in sleep
emotions heaving and seething without any belief
searching in a final place where nightmares creep
so coming too late the hero cringing awash in fear
the sum of all equalling zero a coward’s streak clear
