the night

the night

as the edge of the night appears in a corner of the sky
spreading and covering day until the light disappears
brings on the unnatural fears a ghostly desperate cry
the rooted feet locked in clay a stripping of the gears
where can safety be found a place of refuge in storm
diving dark damp and dank into the moldering shelter
dug down under the ground fetuses waiting to be born
amidst the ripe rubbish rank as iron from the smelter
the clouds obscuring the stars build continuing to roil
lightning slashes jagged lines lights separate moments
thunder’s crashing rumble jars all of the energies coil
while the sheet of rain blinds and conceals condolence
as an edge of the day creeps in a corner of the dark sky
spreading and replacing it seeps as the fallen angles cry
