roots of love

i never meant to be an evil man it grew in me
a wall built of anger rage disillusion and hate
brick by brick stone by stone shutting all out
a few bits of lights a few moments of life let in
living in darkness a deep cave dank and damp
fetid scents inhaled and exhaled over and over
the roots of love understanding and hope rotted
forgotten the fruitful vines barren leafless dead
a heart pumps lungs breath a black mind flickers
thin skin grown thick dry calloused and mottled
wide eyes grown narrow squinting against light
the soul burst tattered blowing on a cold wind
still there is no movement neither inside nor out
cold there is no warmth neither slight nor strong
