Divisions

Peering through the wire
Across the line
At the enemy
Through the smoky haze
The stench of death
Hanging in the air
The only thing in common
With the foe hiding in the shadows
The opposition, the great unknown
Always on the other side

--

The lines are painted on the turf
Separate teams facing one another
With opposite goals, different aims
No common ground
Walls between
They’d kill us if they could
Or so we think
In our own paranoid minds
No way to find the truth
Since we refuse to talk

--

Now within the wire
Am I on the inside or the outside?
It’s hard to tell
The walls divide us all
Someday they might be torn away
But for now, that’s just a fantasy
Maybe in the future, they will fall
But now they stand rock-solid
In our fear and misunderstanding
The wires are barbed, sharp, and dividing

We, in our divisions, lonely, cursed, and small
