WASHINGTON U.S. troops serving along the southern border since Jan. 20 to support Border and Customs Protection agents can now receive the Mexican Border Defense Medal, according to a Pentagon memo.
A defense official who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed the authenticity of the Aug. 13 memo shared on social media but could not provide additional information.
To qualify for the Mexican Border Defense Medal, troops must have been permanently assigned, attached, or detailed to a unit that deployed as part of a designated Defense Department operation supporting federal border agents for 30 days, according to the memo.
Military personnel must have deployed within 100 nautical miles of the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas including San Antonio, New Mexico, Arizona and California, or in U.S. waters up to 24 nautical miles from the border.
Eligible service members will receive the Mexican Border Defense Medal instead of the Armed Forces Service Medal, which had been awarded to troops supporting federal agents along the U.S.-Mexico border starting in 2019, according to the memo.

Can't have too many ribbons and medals. Look at the racks on any military dictator. (will restrain myself from comment upon one of our military branches as opposed to the others)
This will doubtless be a proud badge worn by those who are actively participating in the destruction of American democracy. It will rank well above the two red, one yellow bar of the "medal" we got when graduating from bootcamp in the 1960s. We called it the "Gedunk Ribbon"
"Gedunk" being the proper term for junk food, and/or the canteen where you could get it.

(5,013 posts)Four days after confirming that it was creating a new medal for troops deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border, the Department of Defense released the first look for the award.
The Pentagon released the first look at the new Mexican Border Defense Medal today. The release follows the establishment of the new award, outlined in an Aug. 13 memo by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. The award goes to troops deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border supporting operations by Customs and Border Protection. The new medal replaces the Armed Forces Service Medal, which had been authorized for the same mission in 2019.
The Aug. 13 memo was posted on military social media accounts last week but the Pentagon only confirmed its authenticity on Aug. 18. No design details or images of the award were released at the time. Hegseth posted on X on Aug. 22 that the new Mexico Border Defense Medal would be the same mold, same ribbon as the 1918 Mexican Border Service Medal.
And the design shared by the Pentagon really is identical, with the same yellow and green-stripped ribbon and pattern on the actual metal. The Mexican Border Service Medal, which was issued to troops on the United States side of the border between 1916-1917. A similarly named Mexican Service Medal was issued for service members who took part in military operations inside Mexico between 1911-1919.
