Related: About this forumHad gun safety training with the young grandkids a few days ago
A 3 year old, two 7 year olds and the 8 year old were over one evening with the three oldest staying the night. They had brought their nerf guns over and I gathered the kids together and using one of their nerf guns as a training aid, instructed them about the 4 basic rules they should allows follow when ever they have a gun. I told them to practice abiding by the rules when they play.
The oldest were attentive but the 3 year old wasn't. That was expected. In the future, I'm going to incorporate putting away their guns and ammo after they are done with them. It isn't grandpa's job to look all over the house for the nerf guns when they are getting ready to leave.
We also did safe room training.
After they left, my wife and I agreed that we should order some nerf guns to keep here and I did. They love playing with them and I'll use them as training aids

(36,145 posts)Never leave a semi-auto stored with a round in the chamber. For most it only takes a pull of the trigger for a 3 year old to shoot someone. If you need to use it, takes less than a second to rack a round. I wonder how many accidental deaths and injuries would not have happened with this rule followed.

(3,381 posts)I mean a 5 year old should be taught at the minimum:
-A gun is *always* loaded
-If you find one lying around TELL AN ADULT, do not touch it!
-Never point it as something you don't want to see dead or destroyed
Even if a person hates guns, gun owners, and the idea of private citizens owning them, their kids should know the above!
I stressed several times that if they come across a real gun, not to touch it and to get an adult.
