(726 posts)That are from the depression era. Both are easy and pretty good. One is a chocolate cake that she called depression cake and the other is cold water buns.

(1,472 posts)I'd watched this video the other day, thinking this might've been something my Gran would've served on the farm in the Depression... Not convinced, despite the guy's surprised reaction.
But no... I just stumbled into a FB video from Garron Noone (Irish musician who somehow became an authority on everything Irish and many things not), and what should the topic be? Water pie. He is not a fan. Just made me laugh. Maybe because I tend to be sweary, myself, but yeah, whipping something out of nothing but fat and sugar just seems a sad excuse for dessert.
With 10 kids, all the girls kitted with flour sack dresses (the bags used to be printed 2ith flowers and such for this purpose), I can see my Gran making this but can't really believe she would've been nostalgic about it.
