Part Irish? Surprise ... maybe not
To be honest, I never cared much about genealogy. However, I was curious about rumors of Irish ancestry second citizenship/passport options. Short answer: for me, it was not an option. However, my curiosity did lead to a discovery. I wrote a note about it below to my aunt:

I had always been told that your father Edgar (who died before I was born) was Irish/Swedish. Well, apparently that may be wrong.
By accident, I started looking through FamilySearch.org all the way back into the early 1700s and found that your father's ancestors were actually from Wales and Basel, Switzerland (on the southwest German border).
The [mother's maiden name] family tree shows that your other grandparents were from far north Germany near Kiel, very close to Denmark.
My grandparents on my father's side both emigrated from another northern area of Germany, Essen, closer to the Netherlands.
I used to say I was mostly German and part Irish / Swedish. Now I will have to change that to German and part Welsh / Swiss.
