I wonder if people really understand how this sort of oppression and danger destroys lives. Life there could be decades of trauma and cruelty — or a life of lies, marriage, hiding and vigilance.

Religion? No thanks.

My personal experience was extremely toxic. It is a danger that I want no part of, ever again.

That's not something they concern themselves with, sadly. Anyone homophobic enough to pass a law like this doesn't see a person's sexuality as something that is an inextricable part of who they are. They see it as a choice. As far as they're concerned, they're just outlawing sex acts they don't approve of. They think that if someone doesn't want to be punished for performing those acts, they can simply choose not to do so.

It's stupid and crazy and awful, but it's how those people think, and it's the way some people think, and it's not helpful to pretend otherwise.
