Vladimir Putins growing unpopularity in Russia means he cannot afford to end the war with Ukraine, as he will be lynched by his own people, one of the presidents greatest personal enemy in the West has warned.
Sir Bill Browder told The Independents World of Trouble podcast: If he does a peace deal, hell lose power. If he loses power, then hell get strung up from a lamp post.
The anti-corruption campaigner, who once ran the biggest investment fund in Russia, has fought against Putin for nearly two decades.
His latest intervention comes days after Nato leaders met in Turkey and agreed to allow Kyiv to produce its own Patriot air defence missiles, vital in withstanding the onslaught from Moscow.

(3,449 posts)But setting that piece aside, Putin is not young. He will probably be dead in a few years one way or another. His whole ascent has been for the single-minded purpose of re-assembling the USSR. He cannot stop in Ukraine without giving up that grand plan, which he will not do.
Bottom line: he must be defeated militarily in a decisive way, and then the Russian people can do what they will with him. If we had a President looking out for American interests, we wouls be helping Europe to make this happen, and then have a plan for helping bring Russia into the First World as a respoposible party.

He's 73; as far as I know, he hasn't had significant health problems so far. He could have another 15 years to go, quite easily.

(3,449 posts)I'm guessing these won't be pleasant years for him. He will be looking over his shoulder every step he takes, wondering if one of his "loyal lieutenants" is about to do him in.
