LONDON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Russia is preparing to test its new nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered cruise missile and if successful, plans to use the results to bolster its negotiating position with the West, Ukrainian military intelligence said on Friday.
Andriy Yusov, a spokesperson for the service, issued the written statement to Reuters just before U.S. President Donald Trump was due to hold talks in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin on ending Moscow's war in Ukraine.
He did not give an assessment of the possible timing of the test in the statement, given in response to questions submitted by Reuters for a report published on Tuesday that Moscow was preparing to test the 9M730 Burevestnik cruise missile.
He did not say how his service arrived at its assessment. It has for years received intelligence from the United States and its NATO allies, and it has its own networks inside Russia.

(39,845 posts)When the Nazis were launching V-1s and V-2s at Great Britain, some in UK Defense said it was like sending bombers on a one-way mission, made from resources that couldn't be used again and which depleted German stores, all to deliver one warhead.
(Of course the missiles weren't losing pilots, and Germany was running so low on trained pilots that eventually the Allies mostly had the air to themselves. So the V-weapons were a choice born of desperation as well as Hitler's megalomania.)
Why build a nuclear reactor to deliver one warhead, even if it is nuclear ?

(9,654 posts)It's a very expensive and hard to make missile to use against Ukraine when they have plenty of other cheaper ones that do just as good of a job. Using it on another country like the US would just trigger a massive war and possibly a Nuclear one and you would need thousands of those to make a small dent which are expensive and hard to make so why not just use Nukes. Now nuclear powered nuclear missiles would be pretty damaging since they would be harder to intercept but still, mutually assured destruction just one side would have faster missiles. Not going to stop the MAD. Using them with naval engagements would make more sense but as we have seen with the Ukraine war Russia does not really have a good record of successful missile launches with a lot of the regular conventional ones coming back down on the Russian populace. Cant see a more complex one having that much better of a record and while the Russian populace will take a bunch, spewing nuclear material into them might just be too much. Its a stupid idea and just another "look at the scary thing" from them.
