India's Bold Ambition: Pioneering Green Hydrogen on a Global Scale

India is steering towards becoming a leading global player in the green hydrogen market. At the FICCI Green Hydrogen Summit 2025 in New Delhi, Union Minister Shripad Naik unveiled the government's ambitious plan to capture 10% of the global demand, projected to surpass 100 million metric tonnes by 2030.

The government has awarded 3,000 megawatts of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 companies, marking a significant industrial advancement. Shripad Naik stated that the aim is to transform India into a major producer and exporter of green hydrogen. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, 19 companies have been awarded production capacity totaling 862,000 tonnes annually.

India's substantial renewable energy infrastructure has facilitated these goals. By June 2025, India achieved nearly 237 gigawatts of renewable energy capacity, with contributions from solar, wind, and hydroelectric sources. Non-fossil fuels, together with nuclear power, now account for over half of India's installed energy capacity. This success is seen as fulfilling a national commitment ahead of schedule.

The FICCI Green Hydrogen Committee Chair, Rajat Seksaria, praised government initiatives such as the Production Linked Incentive scheme and the world's first green ammonia auction for fostering market demand and investor confidence.
