Blue whales the largest animals on Earth aren't singing as much anymore, and that's got scientists concerned.
A study published in PLOS analyzing six years worth of acoustic data collected from the ocean's floor found that blue whale vocalizations have been decreasing as the animal's food sources have disappeared.
The monitor a hydrophone sitting on the sea floor off the coast of California collected sounds from the various creatures in the ocean, including multiple whale species.
By coincidence, the recordings began during a marine heatwave that is unprecedented in modern times. According to the study, the heatwave reduced the amount of krill available for blue whales to consume. As the krill disappeared, so too did the blue whale songs.

(28,049 posts)We're not losing species and families and genera by the dozens or hundreds. Sadly, we humans are responsible for many animals going extinct, but we're really not yet at mass extinction rates. This may be helpful:

Actually look at the link , and note that previous mass extinctions ranged from 75 to 96 percent of all species. We are laughably below that number.

I would try harder, but my job is killing me (nearly literally, I'm exhausted) although the other half is trying to care for my wife (stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and she's currently in the ICU).
I'll try to find the article and post as an original post, if you can find contact information for Costco's sustainability manager through a store or calling the company? Then we could get some of us to sign an e-mail. Judylynn would probably help with that as a lot of folks her follow her.

(41,446 posts)Along with other oceanic food chain creatures. Much of oceanic life are heading toward the poles where colder oxygenated water is, and in sub-tropic zones coral reef ecosystems are dying. Oceanic animals are headed toward the poles at a much faster rate than are land animals.

(95 posts)Looks like there was an idea to create iceberg making submarines a while back. Sorry if this was already mentioned, no time to double check. Couldn't find more info to see if the science panned out. Did find several links to some "unusual" websites but do wonder about the idea. I would much rather try to cool the ocean than block the sun. However, the hemodynamics of icemelt and ocean temperature are pretty complex it seems, so not so simple as just adding ice. Best solution still to reduce greenhouse grass emissions. You can search for yourself too but here's a link to the one resource I found on a quick search. Have no idea if this idea is realistically feasible or just hopeful thinking. Seems like the latter. https://www.nbcnews.com/mach/science/ice-making-submarine-would-pop-out-bergs-replace-dwinding-sea-ncna1039561
I imagine also collectively working to reduce flat surfaces and buildings that get much hotter than grasses or plants would (like asphalt and astroturf/plastics) would be good, and they are everywhere and local. Maybe swapping lawns for clover or other ground cover and ditching the lawnmower (gas powered run for an hour creates as much green house emission as 100 cars, read that somewhere long ago). https://washingtoncitypaper.com/article/222039/straight-dope-how-much-pollution-do-gasoline-powered-lawn-mowers/. I still like the notion of trying to do the ocean thing too as some smaller scale perhaps?
Sad to see the whales in trouble.
