Canada wildfires prompt air quality warnings for Upper Midwest, Northeast

Hundreds of wildfires still burning in Canada are expected to undermine air quality across the Upper Midwest and Northeast into Tuesday.

At least 738 wildfires are currently burning in Canada, with at least 201 out of control, according to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre.

As a result, at least eight states from Wisconsin to Maine were under air quality alerts as of Monday morning due to wildfire smoke.

Heavy smoke will run through that corridor on Monday, with hazy skies expected from Green Bay, through Detroit and New York City to Boston.

Those fires simply should not be burning right now. The ground should be too wet to support the fires. Botany Aug 4 #3

On a clear day I can see mountains that are about 120 miles away. Right now, can't see past the tops of the trees at the end of the yard and it's pretty hazy near the ground.

Today, it is clearing up nicely. I hope it does the same for you and your neighbors.

Many a summer in Montana where I just accepted that I became an unwilling two pack a day smoker without the benefit of cigarettes. Some years it went on for months, all the smoke in the west ends up passing through Montana for some reason. Of course the state has had its share of fires over the years. For some reason, Idaho wasn't as bad regarding wildfire smoke.

I think it's predicted to clear by tomorrow night. I hope so!

Air quality has been bad in upper Midwest for several days now. And the trend is… it’s getting worse. (cough)

That land is boreal forest or Tiaga which should be covered with snow 5 to 8 months a year, the ground is covered with
moss, ferns, rotted timbers, evergreens, plants like blueberries, sphagnum moss, and fungi all of which stay wet. And the
land is thick with wetlands, lakes, ponds, streams, and rivers and under that land is granite that doesn’t allow the water to
soak into it too.
