LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The union representing officers within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department is polling its membership about a potential strike ahead of a planned increase in Nevada’s retirement contribution rate.

Last November, the board overseeing the state-run Public Employees’ Retirement System (PERS) program voted to increase the amount of pay that state employees, as well as police and fire department employees, must contribute.

The board increased the rate for police and fire members to 58.75% from 50%. Metro police employs more than 4,000 sworn officers.

“This means that on the second check in July, your pay will decrease by 4.375%,” Las Vegas Police Protective Association (LVPPA) union leadership said in an email the 8 News Now Investigators obtained. “We are expected to receive a 2.6% [cost-of-living increase] on July 1. The net reduction in your rate of pay will be 1.9%.”
