Healthcare workers took to the picket line this morning, saying integration with UCSF will cut income, disrupt pensions, and chase away senior staff, harming patient care.
A years-long integration between Childrens Hospital Oakland and the University of California San Francisco has reached a tipping point for East Bay healthcare workers. Hospital staff represented by the National Union of Healthcare Workers went out on strike at 7 a.m. Wednesday morning to protest the latest step in the universitys integration plan, in which UCSF plans to transfer employees to their organization, risking major cuts to take-home pay, a loss of senior staff, and hits to patient care.
This is such a massive overreach by UCSF, said Carly Sanders, a pediatric occupational specialist at the hospital, formally called UCSF Benioff Childrens Hospital Oakland. It has nothing to do with making patient care better. Its reflective of the Trumpian nature of our current politics where theres a movement to dismantle workers rights and transfer funds from working people to those who need it least.
