Costa Rican president galvanizes right-wing base to vote for successor Laura Fernandez - DW News

In Costa Rica, vote counting is still underway, but it looks like Laura Fernández -- the ruling‑party frontrunner -- has secured a commanding lead in the country's presidential election. With partial results coming in from around two-thirds of Costa Rica's polling stations, Fernandez looks to have secured the presidency. Costa Rica has long been viewed as a beacon of stability in a volatile region -- but is now grappling with a surge in violent crime. Fernandez is running on a platform to continue the politics of the outgoing president, right-wing populist Rodrigo Chaves.

DW's Jules Giessler discusses how this election has had an unusually high turnout.

There used to be a poster here who lives in Costa Rica. His screen name was Arcos.

He was much appreciated, and very concerned about events in his government.
