Bolsonaro planned to flee to Argentina, Brazil police say

Police in Brazil have accused former President Jair Bolsonaro, 70, and his 41-year-old son Eduardo of obstruction of justice.

They allege that the two tried to interfere in the trial currently under way against the elder Bolsonaro, in which he stands accused of leading an attempted coup after his defeat in the 2022 presidential election.

Police say they have found a document on Jair Bolsonaro's mobile phone which suggests he planned to evade criminal proceedings by seeking asylum in Argentina.

They also accuse Eduardo Bolsonaro of lobbying the Trump administration on behalf of his father - which they say led to the US imposing punitive tariffs on Brazilian goods.

Bolsonaro given 48 hours to explain alleged plans to flee to Argentina (The Guardian)

Brazilian supreme court judge sets ultimatum after police claim far-right populist sought to flee to avoid punishment over failed coup

A supreme court judge has given Brazil’s ex-president, Jair Bolsonaro, 48 hours to explain police claims he was planning to flee to Argentina to avoid punishment for allegedly masterminding a failed coup after losing the 2022 election.

Bolsonaro’s trial for the alleged attempt to seize power is scheduled to conclude early next month. The far-right populist faces more than four decades in prison if found guilty.

Court documents made public on Wednesday night showed federal police investigators had found a draft asylum request on the ex-president’s mobile phone addressed to Argentina’s rightwing president, Javier Milei. In the undated and unsigned document, Bolsonaro claimed he was “facing imminent arrest” for political motives and needed “urgent” sanctuary overseas.

Here's hoping Bolsonaro's legal troubles will bring failure for Trump, too. He and his oldest children got to work during his first occupation of the White House trying to build a powerful bond with Bolsonaro and his sons, along with El Salvador's Bukele, and Trump and Elon Musk tried to seduce Argentina's Milei in the last year.

It's tremendous news that Bolsonaro was discovered before he could creep off to Argentina. Hope his imprisonment will become even more secure until his trial, and, hopefully, after that.

Thank you. It's a great day whenever Bolsonaro is thwarted.
