Reports of August 12 Windows 11 update corrupting disks.

I don't see a fix posted anywhere. Just sharing the info I found.

There's a Hacker News post that points to a YouTube video of the problem ( so you don't have to see it here)

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=45079899

From the video: Title with mandatory ALL CAPS words:

BEWARE! Windows Update and SSD Problem is WAY worse than we thought! Full Demonstration

The issue with Windows Updates causing SSD Dropouts is WAY more widespread than we initially thought! Our drive is affected and its not even on the list of know drives with issues, plus our issue is different than others have experienced!

Any attempt to copy a file >2GB to an external SSD causes the drive to go offline in the middle of the transfer and a message of no such drive. I haven’t yet seen fatal corruption of the drive but I haven’t tried copying anything since the specific fix mentioned was installed.
This has occurred across different SSD models since at least February 2025.
I keep my system up to date with only 2-3 days delay after Patch Tuesday.
I’ve tried all sorts of fixes recommended online, none have worked.

Some WD drives were suspect a while back ( last year? ) but mine weren't in the batches mentioned.

Ouch. Good luck tracking it down.

I have a mix of magnetic and SSD drives. Does it affect only the SSD's?

I don't suspect that it's "wires" though I've had glitches charging mobile devices, and even an audio cable that is now in the trash bin.
