Wisconsin Elections Commission orders Madison to revamp absentee ballot process

MADISON (WKOW) — The Wisconsin Elections Commission has ordered Madison to change its handling of absentee ballots after 198 ballots went uncounted last election.

The commission is aiming to ensure this issue does not happen again by ordering new requirements. The new mandates cover poll book printing, staff training, and absentee ballot management, with a focus on transportation and verification.

Officials reported that the ballots remained in sealed envelopes and were discovered only after Election Day.

"This serious issue should not proceed without corrective action," Ann Jacobs, the commission's chair, said.
