64% of Washington voters disapprove of Donald Trump's job performance, a new record in NPI's Civic Heartbeat polling

Dissatisfaction with Donald Trump’s job performance is rising even in blue bastions like Washington as Trump sheds support from segments of the electorate that have long been in his corner, the Northwest Progressive Institute’s latest Civic Heartbeat survey has found. A record high 64% of likely Washington voters surveyed a few days ago by Emerson College Polling for NPI said they disapproved of Trump’s job performance, which is the highest figure we have ever seen in response to this question in our research, while 30% said they approved and another 5% were not sure.

Trump received 38.07% of the vote in Washington in 2016, 38.77% in 2020, and 39.01% in 2024. It’s evident that a meaningful percentage of the voters who supported him one or more times in the last three presidential elections are unhappy with his decisions. (It would not be accurate to say Trump is governing, because governance is not what we’re getting from this regime — rather, Trump is occupying the presidency and using the federal government’s powers to enrich himself and his pals.)

Trump had already imposed costly, unconstitutional tariffs and launched immoral, illegal mass deportation campaigns prior to our winter 2026 Civic Heartbeat poll in February. But he had not yet restarted his war of choice with Iran, goaded on by Israel’s right wing prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. It’s that decision and its extremely consequential negative effect on gas and diesel prices that appears to have driven his job performance rating to the precipice of the twenties in Washington State. You can see that the percentage of voters disapproving of Trump’s job performance has mostly hovered between 59%-61% for a rather long time, even going back to his first term:

ere’s the question we asked and the answers we received:

QUESTION: Do you approve or disapprove of President Donald Trump’s job performance?

ANSWERS:

Approve: 30%
Disapprove: 64%
Not sure: 5%
