Visit Seattle cuts economic impact forecast for World Cup, with fewer foreign fans expected

Destination marketing group Visit Seattle on Thursday released updated numbers around the 2026 FIFA World Cup's local economic impact.

Visit Seattle projects the World Cup to generate $845.6 million for King County over the six matches at Lumen Field this summer, down from a 2024 projection of $929 million. The tournament is expected to generate $95.8 million in state and local tax revenue, down from more than $100 million in the earlier projection.

A Visit Seattle spokesperson said in an email the decreased economic impact is partly due to a $20 million reduction in capital expenditure spending due to altered requirements from FIFA, but also fewer international soccer fans visiting Seattle for the World Cup. A projected increase in domestic visitors should offset that, the spokesperson added, making the total number of visitors the same.

Domestic visitors, however, generally stay for shorter trips than international visitors, which means less total spending here.
