Chad Magendanz and Voter Science LLC are writing push polls instead of adhering to the scientific method

Eager for a revolving supply of numbers that aligns with the narratives they’re trying to peddle, right wing Republicans have in recent years made a big investment in generating garbage data — percentages that were obtained by deliberately violating the cardinal rule of asking neutral questions of representative samples in survey research. The practice has become so ubiquitous that our team at the Northwest Progressive Institute wonders if there are any firms affiliated with the Republican Party that aren’t doing it.

Fake it till we make it has seemingly become gospel inside the Washington State Republican Party, which — along with its national counterparts — keeps paying for surveys that fail to adhere to the scientific method. Many were commissioned with the apparent intent to influence mass media coverage in Republicans’ favor, like this one from Trafalgar in 2022 or this one from Echelon in 2024.

Last week, Republicans dropped another, this one said to be a poll of Washington’s 3rd Congressional District. Conducted by the local outfit Voter Science, LLC, it purported to show incumbent Democratic Representative Marie Gluesenkamp Perez several percentage points behind three different Republicans who all have less name recognition than she does. Problematically, only toplines were provided — no methodology, no question text, no demographic information, and no fielding dates — as I discussed here.

Since that post went up, we’ve been taking a closer look at what Voter Science is up to, and we’ve obtained, through a series of screenshots, a mostly complete copy of a survey that voters in Washington’s 5th Legislative District were recently invited to take.
