Islamic center plans mixed-use project on former motel property in Tukwila

Early details for a mixed-use project on International Boulevard South in Tukwila emerged last month when Abu-Bakr Islamic Center filed plans for an old, nearly 1-acre motel property that's been in play for over seven years.

The mixed-use affordable housing plan is called Wadajir (Somali for "together&quot and calls for a six-story building made of four to five floors of wood-frame construction over one to two floors of concrete-and-steel construction encasing 25,000 square feet of community and commercial space.

This is according to plans that Environmental Works Community Design Center submitted to the city July 22. Located across the boulevard from the Abu-Bakr center, 14110 Tukwila International Blvd. S., Wadajir will have 90 affordable family-sized apartments and 50 podium parking stalls.

Public development authority Community Roots Housing and Edge Construction LLC of Tacoma are listed on the submittal.
