Washington rock climbers work to improve trails near Index
EVERETT The Washington Climbers Coalition and Access Fund Conservation Team are working to enhance trails around the rock-climbing areas Lookout Point and Private Idaho in Index on Aug. 2-3 and Aug. 9-10.
We bought two parcels there over the last 12 years, and were getting ready to donate them to Washington State parks, WCC President Matt Perkins said in an interview.
The coalition has operated trail projects and cleanups in Index since 2005, its website said, including an improved parking lot and a provided porta-potty at one of the areas most popular climbing spots, Lower Town Wall. WCC has also maintained climber areas in Gold Bar and Darrington.
As an organization, we formed in 2004 with the expressed purpose of enhancing climbing opportunities and preserving those opportunities in Washington state, Perkins said. Trail construction and maintenance can play a significant role in preserving climbing opportunities.
