Washington State Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad elected as a Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee
Washington State Democratic Party Chair Shasti Conrad will replace David Hogg as a Vice Chair of the Democratic National Committee, the DNC announced yesterday.
Conrad is the winner of an unusual redo election that was staged after DNC members voted to uphold a challenge to part of the vice chair elections held at the reorganization meeting back in January. The winners of those elections were Malcom Kenyatta, a state representative from Pennsylvania, and David Hogg, a courageous gun responsibility activist from Florida. Oklahomas Kalyn Free, who competed with Kenyatta and Hogg for one of those vice chair spots, subsequently contended the election did not follow party rules. Frees challenge first went to the Credentials Committee; it was then referred to the DNC as a whole. DNC members voted 294 to 99 to uphold the challenge.
After that happened, Hogg announced he wouldnt run in the do-over election. The young activist has tangled publicly and privately with new DNC Chair Ken Martin, mainly over his effort to fund challenges to entrenched Democratic incumbents, which is incompatible with Martins plans for a DNC that is neutral in Democratic primaries.
That made the last of the DNCs three vice chair positions the equivalent of an open seat. Kenyatta was easily retained by DNC members in his post. With Hogg stepping down to focus on his work with Leaders We Deserve, there was an opportunity for one of the candidates who didnt make it to become an elected vice chair of the DNC.
