VA-SD39: Bennett-Parker (D) wins Va. Senate District 39 special election
Democrat Elizabeth Bennett-Parker won a special election Tuesday to represent Virginias 39th Senate District, holding the seat for her party and preserving Democrats narrow majority in the chamber as longtime state Sen. Adam Ebbin departs to join Gov. Abigail Spanbergers administration.
By 7:45 p.m., Bennett-Parker defeated Republican Julie Robben Lineberry with 81.218.4% of the vote out of 7,254 ballots cast, according to unofficial results from the Virginia Department of Elections. Her victory keeps Democrats edge at 2119 in the 40-member Senate.
In a separate special election also held Tuesday to fill Bennett-Parkers Alexandria-anchored House of Delegates District 5 seat, Democrat Kirk McPike prevailed against Republican Mason Butler with 79.719.6% of the vote out of 3,545 ballots cast, ensuring that Democrats also retained that seat.
Bennett-Parkers election fills the vacancy Ebbin is leaving as he steps into a senior advisory role at the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority, a position that places him at the center of ongoing debates over creating a regulated adult-use cannabis marketplace.
