Horrifying pink jellyfish with 70-foot tentacles found on the Texas coast: 'Pretty rare'

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/pink-meanies-jellyfish-texas-beach-b2831984.html

Several rare and enormous jellyfish, nicknamed the “pink meanie,” were spotted on a Texas beach this week – horrifying beachgoers with their expansive tentacles that can stretch up to 70 feet.

More than 10 cotton candy-colored jellyfish were spotted along a 10-mile stretch of beach, (said) Jace Tunnell, the director of community engagement at Harte Research Institute.

The pink jellyfish, known as Drymonema larsoni, can weigh over 50 pounds and have tentacles that stretch up to 70 feet, Tunnell said.

Their appearance coincides with an influx of moon jellyfish, their primary source of food.

A little more at link, including a photo.

Article notes that their sting is not nearly as severe as with some other species of jellyfish.

The Independent is a UK publication, so they can get away with it. And I love the fact that there is a creature called the "pink meanie."

When he first did this I started thinking how people here in Texas would react, not in opinion but actual daily usage..And it dawned on me that everyone just says "the Gulf" anyway.

There's the Persian Gulf, the Gulf of Oman, the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland. Nothing nearby.
