City submits official tax rate proposal, special election for firefighters
VICTORIA, Texas - The Aug. 5 city council meeting featured an extensive report involving the 2026 Fiscal Year budget and a proposed tax rate increase.
The city is proposing a new tax rate at about 48 cents per $100 property valuation. That's an increase from the 2025 rate of $0.4704 per $100 valuation. It's also over the 'no-new revenue rate' as the city expects to see greater revenue next Fiscal Year. The proposed rate is the highest the city can raise it without an election.
Mayor Duane Crocker and Councilman Steve Kidder requested that the city staff present a budget with a tax rate lower than the proposed rate. Mayor Crocker was the lone vote against making the proposed rate the city's official tax proposal.
City Manager Jesus Garza gave a presentation on the upcoming budget and explained how a decrease in home appraisal values and one of the lowest rates of revenue from new properties in 10 years led to their recommendation of the increased tax rate.
