'Elections have consequences' as West Shore School Board tables far-right policies

“Elections have consequences.”

That's what West Shore School Board Chair Kelly Brent said after the board tabled three policies — including a restrictive book policy and an anti-LGBTQ+ bathroom policy — that had been priorities of the outgoing far-right majority.

Brent, one of two far-right members who lost reelection earlier this month, quoted a political truism made famous by former President Barack Obama. In addition to the electoral losses, a third board member — former board Chair Heidi Thomas — abruptly resigned in October. Her seat was filled by a more moderate new member, John Dormuth, who was sworn in minutes before Thursday's meeting.

Dormuth's seating prompted the call to table the policies. The third would define how parents and guardians can observe classrooms, something that raised concern about disruption during the school day.
